Welcome to Cameron's Corner
Get To Know You Interviews
Thank you to all of our families who last week spoke with their children's teachers and helped provide further information to assist us in setting up a successful and specific curriculum. As we all know, communication is the key to success and we encourage all parents to stay involved and let us know how we can work together for our students and your children.
District Swimming
Congratulations to the 25 students from Grades 3 - 6 who represented Mentone Park at the District Swimming carnival yesterday in Noble Park. Through a mix of weather conditions our students gave their all, whilst both competing and supporting, and represented us wonderfully. Thanks also to Hope Laycock for her organisation and Maddie Oates for supporting the students on the day.
Bayblades
This year the current toy craze for our Junior and Middle School students is Bayblades, with many students bringing them to school to battle their friends at recess and lunchtime. Whilst this is an engaging activity could I please ask parents to talk with their children about playing responsibly and being inclusive with their toys. We are encouraging sharing, turn taking and taking responsibility for your toys but some students are getting very competitive when challenging other students, and in some cases recently Bayblades are being thrown or swapped when a challenge is lost.
Correct School Uniform
Thank you to parents and students for always endeavouring to be in complete school uniform. We have a very smart uniform and our students generally wear it with pride. This also includes items such as hair ties, head bands and accessories, which should be either red, black or white. As we move into winter, jumpers and jackets will become necessary and no doubt the fleecy vests and pull overs will be more prevalent. Please ensure all items are named as this enables us to return items as soon as possible.
Very soon our Grade 6 Polos will arrive and you will see a change from the regular design, I will look forward to your opinions. Grade 6 Hoodies will also arrive soon, just in time for the colder days.
School Council
Recently we held a process to elect our 2019/20 School Council and I am proud to announce that Koula Tsiaplias and Jenny Olechnowicz are our new members. I would also like to thank Kate Porter and Dana Killmister for their time and commitment to our school. Both Dana and Kate chose not to renominate but have indicated they will continue to support us with help and advice moving forward.
Our next School Council Meeting is the AGM which is held on 25 March where I will present our Annual Report. This will then be made available to the school community after this meeting.
Science has started
Last year, through numerous fundraising activities, we began gathering resources and professional knowledge to assist us with the implementation of a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program. This week some classes began their STEM program and were introduced to some simple coding activities using Sphero's. These small robotic balls are great fun and an interactive way to introduce students to coding and robotics.
In addition to this we currently have a 3D printer on loan and were considering how this can be implemented into our new and exciting curriculum.
2020 Enrolments-
sibling enrolments
Tours for 2020
have already commenced, as we continue to have increased demand for places at Mentone Park Primary School. Enrolments for 2020 are now being taken. Families with
siblings intending to enrol for 2020 are asked to do so this term, to ensure
the availability of places whilst we accommodate all requests from our
neighbourhood area.
Our Foundation Learning Space looks amazing and with Jo-Ann, Kate, Sarah and Alison providing an engaging and challenging program we are sure to have increased interest in our school. At this stage of the year I have already completed over 13 individual tours with more scheduled in the coming weeks. All this without any promotion, which will begin at the start of Term 2.
Enrolment forms and information packs are available from the office so please feel free to come in or call if you require more information.

From
the Wellbeing Desk
I
have attached a letter from Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the Federal
Minister for Education Dan Tehan regarding student wellbeing. There are some
great new resources that have been developed to help empower parents and
educators to support children in today’s society.
Here
are hyperlinks to the websites listed in the letter:
Our
school wellbeing team of teachers are busy preparing some great resources and
activities for us to recognise the National Day of Action against Bullying and
Violence and also Harmony Day coming up in March. More information to come home
soon!
Awards
Recipients
Here
is a photo of our first group of personal best awards winners for 2019. Well
done everyone!
Specialist
teachers are also awarding a special trophy and certificate each week to the
class who have Terrific Teamwork, Perfect Participation and Best Behaviour. Well
done to the first two classes to receive this award – 3/4B (Mrs Febbraro’s
class) and 5/6B (Mrs Beer’s class).
From
the Music Room
What
a fun couple of weeks I’ve had taking all the children for music! We have
learnt some new songs and done lots of singing and movement this week! We’ve
all done more work on keeping the beat and then creating interesting rhythms to
play along with the beat. It was so busy I forgot to take photos for the
newsletter! Next time!
Keep
your eyes out for some displays that will be going up in the music room and
library in the coming weeks! The children are helping me celebrate the joy that
music and reading brings with some quotes, pictures and posters.
NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE – 14th
March
Friday the 15th March is the National Day of
Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).
Students and school communities are invited to turn big
ideas into action! Parents, teachers, students and all members of our school
community can turn ideas into action and help deliver a powerful message that
bullying and violence are never okay.
With their classes, students will participate in a NDA
school engagement activity which will provide a chance for students to lead
action in an area identified by their class. This will then be explored across
the school year and shared in different ways with the rest of the school
community. The NDA 2019 will open opportunities for authentic student voice,
with teachers supporting students to actively participate in our school
community, put forward their ideas and views, contribute to decision-making and
influence outcomes.
The NDA Organisation have
identified ten possible action areas for student-led action. These action areas
relate to bullying prevention and student wellbeing.
HARMONY DAY – 21st March
On the 21st March, it is Harmony Day. We are
celebrating this special day where inclusion and diversity are the important
messages, by participating in rotation activities, singing special songs that
have been rehearsed by each year level and sharing a diverse range of foods.
Students are encouraged to wear a splash of orange on the
day and asked to bring a plate of food to share – this could be something
traditional from a cultural background, or something special you would like to
share.
Parents are invited to attend assembly on Friday 22nd
March where each year level will perform their song again, and the whole school will
join in singing “Everyone Belongs”.
Have a great week!
