PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Dear Parents,
Well done to all our Year 3 and Year 5 student who completed their NAPLAN testing this week. I was very impressed with the persistence and confidence you all showed. Well done to all the teachers who have influenced these students along the years. Remember that educating a child is our collective responsibility. Congratulations to us all, parents, teachers and students.
AMAZING SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS
Congratulations Anton and Kosta from our senior school who have both achieved amazing sporting recognition over the past few weeks. As you may have seen on Facebook recently Kosta will be competing in the State Tennis Championships on June 1 after successfully navigating his way through the regional events. Only yesterday Anton jetted off to Germany for 5 weeks of elite soccer training and matches against other very talented juniors. Good luck boys from everyone here at Mentone Park PS.
NEW COMPUTERS
This week 49 brand new Lenovo Notebooks arrived at school to be distributed between our Junior and Middle Schools, taking our total investment to 74 new machines since late last year. With these new notebooks students will be able to access broader technologies and applications in order to strengthen their knowledge of the world around them. In preparation for this arrival staff have been exploring the Google for Education Platform and learning themselves about the endless possibilities that present themselves.
PHOTOS
Our school photos arrived today and will be sent home this afternoon.
CURRICULUM DAY – FRIDAY JUNE 1
Don’t forget Friday June 1 is a Curriculum Day and students will not be required at school. OSHClub is available so please book early. Xtreme Air Trampoline Park are offering 2 hours for the price of 1 between 9:30 and 11:30, with $5 from every ticket purchased being donated back to Mentone Park PS.
NO TRASH TUESDAY
Our Green Gang would like to remind all families about No Trash Tuesday. Where possible all food is to come to school in a container, helping to eliminate rubbish from our yard.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Only a few more days to state your preference for the timing of our parent Teacher Interviews. Check out the link below for more details and the chance to have your say. So far 95 families have made their preference.

UNIFORM
I have been asked recently about the new school jumper and I would like to make it clear that this is just an addition to our current uniform range and the very popular bomber jacket and vest will still be available to purchase or hand down to siblings. The round neck jumper will cease production from PSW but there are plenty available from the second hand uniform stall here at school.
ENROLMENT FOR 2019
Don’t forget that you can pick up an enrolment form from the office if you have a child starting Foundation in 2019. In the past few weeks I visited 21 Kindergartens and Early Learning Centres with our transition information and tour opportunities for new families so getting your enrolment forms in early will help us to confirm our enrolment expectations. As I have mentioned previously we already have a number of new families enrolled for 2019, many of whom have heard positive feedback from the community about our wonderful school.
AUSTRALIAS WASTESAVER
We have our large bins in the Kids Café where you can donate clothes that you may not need or your kids have out grown. These are collected regularly and given to families in need.
LET US KNOW IF YOUR CHILD IS AWAY
If your child is away from school can you please either Flexibuzz or call the office to let us know as soon as possible. Many of you will remember the recent media attention around this issue and due to a change of policy, schools will be required to notify parents when a child is absent. Your assistance with this will help us make sure that all students are safe.
CURRICULUM DAY – FRIDAY JUNE 1ST
June 1 will be an assessment and reporting day for staff.

Students are not required at school.
OSHClub will run on this day. Please let OSHClub know as soon as possible if your child will be attending on June 1.
Best wishes

Principal

PFA MOTHERS DAY UPDATE

MPPS had a very busy week leading up to Mother’s Day with lots of excitement with both the Mothers’ Day Breakfast and Mothers’ Day Stall and judging from the attached photos, you can see how much fun was had by those who attended!

The Mothers Day Breakfast was such a success! Huge thank you to the mums, stepmums, Nanna's and Grandma's that came down to enjoy a special morning with the kids! We raised $600 so HUGE thank you to everyone who came along for breakfast and purchased raffle tickets for the 5 prizes! We know you all thought the food tasted amazing as we have had such positive feedback! In fact, we have had so many people comment on how delicious the pancakes were. We have included the recipe below for you so you can have fun recreating them in your homes! We could not have made the event such a success without our army of volunteers this year.  Thank you to each and everyone of you, to the volunteers who prepared the food the day before, to the volunteers who arrived at the school from 6am to set up, to those who helped to pack everything up!

Much love
Amber Whalan and Kate Solomon

PFA President and Vice President

The Mothers Day Stall was also a huge success raising a little over $600 as well! The kids were very excited about coming down to visit us at the Stall this year. It seems to be the talk of the day even for the few days afterwards which warms my heart to no end. As Mothers’ Day celebrations come to a close (at least for school related activities), I would like to take a moment to thank a huge number of helpers that I had throughout the day. As we all know, without the extra helping hands I would not be able to run the stall on my own. Big thanks go out to: Michelle Green, Jess Dixon, Carolyn Allen, Tatiana Brestovetskaia, Christine Graham, Kate Solomon, Kim Foale Gabbie Spoljaric, Natalie Palmer, Michelle Sampieri, Libby Buchanan, Deyana Dixon, Vicki Warner Sheers, Heidi Brickle, Ron Jeffries, Arlene Davies, Jackie Nixayathirath, Katherine Rowe, Penny Giofkou, Sally Hausler. Thank you also to Jess, Michelle & Kate for returning on Friday morning to help finalise all the last minute pick-ups, sales and pack up, your help was very much appreciated. I hope you all had the happiest of Mother’s Days and were all spoilt just that little bit extra on Sunday morning.

With much love

Vicki Limnios

Stall Co-ordinator

Our next event is Italian Day on Tuesday 22nd May (yay no school lunches required to be made on this day)! So don't forget to place your orders for pizza and gelati on QKR by  Thursday 17th May and get ready to have some fun in Italian themed costumes!

ITALIAN DAY - TUESDAY MAY 22

Grazie! Grazie! Mentone Park PS, PFA and Signora Beer, would like to give a huge THANK YOU to Paula and Timothy McAlpine, Ava and Hamish for their wonderful donation of 100 beautiful Italian recipes from the Heart books. Just by coincidence, the Senior school will be embarking upon an Italian Cooking Project in Term 3. These books will provide delicious and authentic Italian recipes for students to prepare for their lucky parents. Once again, many thanks for this very generous donation to our school.

Grazie
Signora Beer

Thank you
Ana & Sarah

OSHCLUB News

This week we are focusing on inclusiveness and building friendships. Plenty of opportunities for children to spend time with some new friends or chat to a classmate they don’t often speak to. There'll be heaps of activities that will involve the entire group and promote new and meaningful friendships between students.
Next Week (21st May – 25th May)
The following week will be about Science! Getting a bit whacky and maybe a bit messy as we explore interesting ideas, compete in cool challenges and have fun with everyone's favourite: slime making.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB

Dear Mentone Park Families,

Welcome to another year at school and the beginning of a new issue of Scholastic Book Club catalogues!. Orders can be left with the office or please order via the online ordering system called  “LOOP”  - details are in the catalogue. When ordering there is an option to mark as a gift if you would like your order sent to the office instead of to class for your child to take home.

To families new to our school the Scholastic Book Club generates reward points which we claim back throughout the year as new books and resources for teachers to use in class. Each book club order earns 20% in rewards points – they soon add up! Scholastic often have some great books on special for as little as $2, so look out for their “gold coin books” in the catalogue

If you need any assistance please don’t hesitate to contact me via the school office or call the Scholastic Customer Service number 1800 021 233.

Best wishes

Jenny O – Book club coordinator
