PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Dear Parents,

We all know that Mentone Park PS is a great community with amazing students and the recent Student Attitude to School Survey results confirmed this even further. Students from Grade 4 – 6 completed this Department of Education survey which focuses on a number of key learning areas as well as wellbeing and student attitudes to learning. Below is a table summarizing all of the key areas and as you will see our students have indicated that they are active and positive learners, keen to do their best and push themselves to maximize their personal potential. Congratulations students and parents for working with us to support every students learning journey.

PRODUCTION DATE – TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 4
It’s now less than a month until our school concert at the Kingston Arts Centre. All students will take a bus in the morning for a dress rehearsal followed by a matinee performance. We will then arrive back at school by 3:30. Students will then go home, refuel and arrive back for our evening session. Tickets will be on sale shortly so please collect your family and friends for one or both performances.

CANBERRA CAMP

The Grade 5 and 6 Camp to Canberra was a wonderful success thanks to the planning and organisation from our amazing staff and the wonderful and mature behaviour of our students. Most of the student highlights focused on the visits to Questacon, the AIS and the War Memorial where the activities were interactive and engaging, however Parliament House was a highlight for many, especially as they saw numerous dignitaries leaving the building after the medal presentations to the Australian volunteers from the Thai mining rescue. As I mentioned at assembly on Friday our students represented their school with pride and to an extremely high standard.

BIKE RACKS
It’s great that many of our students get out in the fresh air and ride their bikes to and from school safely. From Monday August 13 could I please ask all students to store their bike either in the racks provided or in the bike cage area and not against the wall in the garden. We would like to keep this area and your bikes safe.
THE NED SHOW
Yesterday all of our students were treated to The NED Show, which is a performance all the way from America where the key message for students is to Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best. Our host Katie used a combination of Yo Yo tricks, magic and humor to take the students on an adventure exploring the power of yet and how to develop a Growth Mindset.

As part of this performance arrangement we will be selling Yo Yo’s at school until Thursday August 23. They will only be available from my office during lunchtime and can be purchased for either $8, $15 or $20. This is not available through QKR.

CLUBS AND EXTRA CURRICULA ACTIVITIES
Mentone Park PS is proud to offer a number of lunchtime and after school clubs for our students to enjoy and expand their many and varied talents. If your child would like to try Grasshopper Soccer, Star Academy Tennis, Limelight Drama or Art Smart please see the office for more information.

NO TRASH TUESDAY

Our Green Gang would like to remind all families about No Trash Tuesday. Where possible all food is to come to school in a container, helping to eliminate rubbish from our yard.

ENROLMENT FOR 2019
Don’t forget that you can pick up an enrolment form from the office if you have a child starting Foundation in 2019. As I have mentioned previously we already have a number of new families enrolled for 2019, many of whom have heard positive feedback from the community about our wonderful school. We have also organised a special gift for our newly enrolled Foundation students.

LET US KNOW IF YOUR CHILD IS AWAY
If your child is away from school can you please either Flexibuzz or call the office to let us know as soon as possible. Many of you will remember the recent media attention around this issue and due to a change of policy, schools will be required to notify parents when a child is absent. Your assistance with this will help us make sure that all students are safe.

Best wishes

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB

Dear Mentone Park Families,

Welcome to another year at school and the beginning of a new issue of Scholastic Book Club catalogues!. Orders can be left with the office or please order via the online ordering system called  “LOOP”  - details are in the catalogue. When ordering there is an option to mark as a gift if you would like your order sent to the office instead of to class for your child to take home.

To families new to our school the Scholastic Book Club generates reward points which we claim back throughout the year as new books and resources for teachers to use in class. Each book club order earns 20% in rewards points – they soon add up! Scholastic often have some great books on special for as little as $2, so look out for their “gold coin books” in the catalogue

If you need any assistance please don’t hesitate to contact me via the school office or call the Scholastic Customer Service number 1800 021 233.

Best wishes

Jenny O – Book club coordinator
